A Blog About Writing a Blog

Remember when blogs were like an online diary? A lot has changed in the last few decades. What was once the realm of fashion enthusiasts and parenting “experts” is now a tool for businesses of every kind. A blog can be a useful platform to get more eyes on your company’s website, but you need to do it right. Here are the most important things to remember when writing a blog:

Content Generation

There are three main reasons to post a blog to your company website: it’s going to help your customers find you, it’s going to educate your existing customers, or it’s going to add to the “story” of your brand by highlighting your unique culture.

To help customers find you, focus on their potential search terms. For example, if you run a cleaning business, you might write a blog titled “How Much Does a Cleaning Service Cost?” or “What Housekeepers Will and Won’t Clean.” These are phrases that potential customers may type into a search bar, and reading the blog could lead to them actually giving you their business.

Educating existing customers is a bit simpler. You don’t need to worry quite as much about keywords, as most people will find the blog through your social media channels (always post your blogs!) or website. Think about what you wish more customers knew or what questions you are asked the most often and write a blog about it!

For blogs that highlight your culture, almost anything goes! Share about anything fun happening at your business, like a holiday party or local event you participated in. It’s important to ensure that you only include these kinds of blogs if it makes sense for your company — if you’re going for a more serious, professional tone, posting photos from your Halloween party may feel off.

Using Keywords

When used correctly, keywords help your blog get listed higher in search results. It’s important to use the right ones and to use them in a way that feels natural to readers. For smaller businesses, it can be helpful to focus on local keywords. For instance, “cleaning service” may be too saturated to get your blog ranking higher, but “cleaning service in Denton, TX” just might do the trick. Think about what people are actually searching for and use that as a jumping-off point for blog topics and keywords.

Don’t spam your blog content with keywords. Shoot for 1-2 keywords for every 100 words of copy and make sure they flow well within your sentences. It’s jarring to read something that is too keyword-heavy — the keywords should feel like they are almost hidden within natural content.

Should You Use AI to Write Blogs?

AI is quickly taking over the blog writing world, but don’t jump on board just yet. AI has the potential to get important facts wrong or plagiarize content. If you’re new to blog writing, AI could be a useful tool in getting a blog started, but we would caution against blindly posting a blog generated by a computer. Remember: people like your brand because of your unique voice, and they can feel it when something is devoid of humanity. It’s better to take the time to create something that really feels like it captures your company’s vibe than to let a robot write something for you.
